Typography | 2011 free sans serif catch up
Here are a few of the free sans serif fonts that came out towards the end of 2011.
Inder is a modern sans serif along the lines of Futura but less round
Chivo is a wide humanist sans serif in the Swiss tradition, but with large inkwell cutouts
Overlock plays in the space between a serif and a sans serif, much like Optima.
Rosario is a humanist semi serif, that is similar to Gill Sans
Armata is a geometric sci-fi sans serif based largely on an asymmetric squared circle
Sansita One is a nice looking brush sans serif in the style of old sign writing and can be used as a bold italic
Typography | Lost Type Co-op Free Fonts
The Lost Type Co-op has a pay-what-you-want model for all the typefaces, if you want the font free then type 0 in the download box. The font designers get 100% of any pay donations.
The fonts are largely retro and vintage display faces, and mostly all caps, although there are a few exceptions such as the excellent serif Pigeon.

The light weight of the excellent looking book serif Erato free from FontSpring. Erato is a modern interpretation of old Dutch type, and comes with ligatures, small caps, and all the different number figure alignments.

Znikomit is a pretty monoline ultra thin serif font free to download.
Typography | LISA typeface free font
LISA Typeface is a new free font by Dvir. It is an allcaps geometric sans-serif that can best be described as a light American college football display face.
Typography | Floodfonts free fonts including Polaris
Floofonts have some interesting free fonts to download. I particularly like Polaris, which can best be described as a chamfered slab serif with the large blocky serifs you tend to get with slab serifs but with the angled serif you tend to get on an oldstyle serif. The other fonts are various display faces which can come in handy.
