Layout | Occupy Posters

Here are some great looking Occupy posters, largely in the style of old propaganda posters, but also like Saul Bass movie posters, taking off Facebook and other current trends. I think we are going to see more and more good art and design come out of this. It will be interesting what icons get taken up, such as the Guy Fawkes mask from V for Vendetta and the pie chart showing the 99%.

Layout | haiku street signs in new york city

This is an interesting project in New York, a collaboration between the New York City Department of Transportation and artist John Morse. There are 12 designs that promote roadside safety using simple illustration and haiku – the short three line Japanese poem.

I guess the idea is to create something different that may stick with people. It may also cause a roadside distraction as people try to decipher the poem’s meaning while walking infront of traffic.

Some examples of food packaging from Sainsbury’s fro 1962-77. The labels show what can be achieved with simple bold shapes and paired down colour palettes.

Layout | Rugby World Cup Semifinals

The four semifinalists for the Rugby World Cup have been decided, and I got all the hard to pick games wrong. The French decided to finally play some rugby, Wales played the best rugby I have seen them put together and Australia somehow beat South Africa despite having no ball or territory.

I am feeling very nervous for the semifinal between New Zealand and Australia with New Zealand now down to their third and fourth choice pivots, though admittedly the third choice 10, Aaron Cruden, probably played better when he came on than Slade had been playing. Still, with Weepu stepping up to the plate to direct the game and do the kicking, we should still be alright. Australia have their own worries with the form of Cooper and the fitness of Beale. As usual though the game will be decided up front. I pick the New Zealand pack to front up well against Australia, giving the backs just enough to shade Australia and win.

For the other semifinal, I am picking Wales to continue their march to their first World Cup Final, although you can never write off the French.

Layout | Rugby World Cup Quarter Finals

I have been very busy at work, hence the lack of posts of late. However, I am now through that and back online. The Rugby World Cup is now entering the exciting knock out phase. New Zealand, even without Dan Carter, should be too good for Argentina, but the other three Quarter Finals are all hard to pick. I think that England should be too good for a French team that did not deserve to qualify, Ireland will be too strong for an impressive Wales and South Africa will squeeze the life out of Australia.

Now that the second week of action is complete for the Rugby World Cup, I thought that I would update my two score sheets and repost, one a calendar, the other an atlas. Click on the images below to get full resolution PDFs.
