The latest offering from the Lost Type Co-op is the excellent looking Edmond Sans. Edmond Sans is available to download free in Regular, Medium and Bold weights and features small caps, alternates and extended language support.

The LogoLounge has released its tenth annual logo trend report. As usual it makes for interesting reading. I have noticed many of the trends myself, but certainly could not articulate as well as the report does. Click here to read the full report. See below for the trends.

Icon clusters combine semi-opaque icons into a single logo. The icons tend to use well known shapes that have definite meaning, but the combination makes for something new.

Transparent Links use semi-opaque objects linked in a chain, generally using repeating shapes in a circle

Watercolour generally uses a watercolour filter to add texture to an icon, but it can also give a rough edging

The amusingly named Potato Chip are icons using a saddle shape, like Pringles.

Anaglyphs use a printed 3D image of red and cyan to show depth, difference and choice

Selective focus borrows the depth of field techniques from photography

Woven uses macro icons of weaving to show unity and strength

Twined uses white lines to give depth to otherwise flat icons, both cutting them up and keeping the shapes together

Sprout is the latest green washing technique, showing the first sprout of green in a curving first leaf

Peel takes the tired sticker peeling off trick used extensively in packaging and websites for the past few years, and gives it a fresh edge of revealing something new

Sphere Carving takes a three dimensional sphere and cuts shapes such as letters into it, much the way Sony created their logo a few years ago

Apps looks at the blurred lines between logos, favicons and app buttons, expecting to see the shiny buttons starting to appear in unusual locations, this is one trend I hope does not happen.

Tessellation is an evolution from past trends of pixelation, where colourful polygons are combined into single images which range from the simple to the complex

Arc twists are similar to Potato Chips, but with a square twist

Cousin Series show a single icon shape but with multiple different textures applied

Here are some good free sans-serif fonts that have popped up over the past couple of months.

Gandhi Sans is a great looking humanist sans-serif similar to Gill Sans. It comes in the four standard weights of regular, italic, bold and bold italic, making it very useful for standard Word processing. There is also a matching Gandhi Serif, the combination of the two is similar to Gill Sans and Perpetua.

Karla is a great looking open humanist sans-serif in the Swiss style, but with a bit of personality in the double storey g and wonky q. Karla is available in regular, italic, bold and bold italic.

Oswald is a condensed bold humanist sans-serif, good for headlines and similar to Franklin Gothic Condensed.

Economica is a condensed geometric sans-serif with chamfered terminals and could be used as a display face for technology and SciFi. Economica is available in regular, italic, bold and bold italic.

Titan One is a big friendly looking heavy humanist sans-serif. It gives the impression of comics and brush strokes.

I have not been keeping up with posting all the great free fonts that have been coming out of late. There have particularly been plenty of serif fonts. Here is a collection that have come out in the past couple of months.

Gandhi serif is an excellent looking workhorse serif available in the four standard regular, italic, bold and bold italic weights. Gandhi serif also has a matching sans-serif in the same weights. The serif and sans-serif pairings are similar to Gill sans and Perpetua.

Patua One is a bold display font with large chamfered slab serifs.

Tienne is similar with chamfered slab serifs, and is available in regular, bold and heavy.

Foro is a full on slab serif with plenty of personality. Part of a large family, the light weight is free.

Hagin is a condensed serif with large pointed serifs. The font is in capitals and small caps and is for headlines and display purposes. Hagin comes in Light and Medium weights free.

Trykker is an oldstyle serif

Trocchi is a slab serif with some archer style ball terminals on the C, G, J and S. Trocchi comes in Regular and Bold weights free.

Yokawerad is a bold high contrast display face in the Bodoni still, but with some cutouts such as you find in cyrillic fonts.

Rosarivo is a calligraphic oldstyle serif in regular and matching italics

Finally Simonetta is a lovely sloping old style serif available in regular, italic, black and black italic.

A nice advertising series for Siemens extractor fans by Ogilvy. The photoshopped flat kitchens give a sense of cooking outdoors where all the steam and smells from cooking can magically waft away.

I really like this poster series for the Newcastle Festival of Dance by Amy Rodchester. Polygon blocks were created at varying heights and arranged in a chessboard type pattern and topped by images of dancing feet. The arrangement then was photographed giving a slightly uneven pattern. The black and white photos of old fashioned shoes and the pastel tones give a nice vintage touch to what would otherwise be a very modern poster.
