Layout | Vintage Movie Posters worth a bit of money

The Guardian has a collection of the 10 most expensive movie posters. Expensive not in production, but in the value of the physical poster to a collector. Most of these are great examples of vintage horror movie illustrations, but also include the beautiful Metropolis design. I love the custom type on these posters, and there are some great compositions and perspectives.

Layout | Minimalist Star Wars Posters

I love these minimalist Star Wars posters by Travis English. Check out his tumblr site for more posters such as Dr Who and Harry Potter. Just like the movies, the posters for the original trilogy are probably the best. The posters use simple silhouette illustrations of key locations and protagonists for each film. View other nice Star Wars posters here, here and here.

Layout | Vintage Movie Titles

Steven Hill’s Movie Title Screens Page is a great resource for viewing old movie titles, and how they have changed, as well as some great pieces of custom typography and layout. Here are some excellent vintage ones from 1900-1950.

Layout | Penguin James Bond Book Covers

An excellent series of Penguin James Bond book covers from 2008 to celebrate the centenary of Iam Fleming’s birth. The covers are in the style of the opening credits to the Bond movies, with great custom typography overlaid on sexy images of bond girls.

Excellent looking movie poster for the film Terri. Substituting the table for the title is brilliantly executed, and also frees up real estate for all the other conventional movie poster elements.

Layout | Batman, The Dark Knight Rises teaser poster

Following on from the great poster series for Batman, The Dark Knight, the teaser poster for The Dark Knight Rises is brilliant. I love the unique perspective which contrasts with the building decay.

Layout | Vertigo movie collateral

Saul Bass’ Vertigo movie poster | Annyas.com design blog.

For Hitchcock’s movie Vertigo, Saul Bass designed a series of posters, each taylored to different sizes, as well as the movie credits, symbol, trailer, insert, lobby cards, window card, trade ads and magazine ads. Here is the impressive suite of collateral.

It certainly puts to shame most modern movie posters with their Trajan titles, floating heads and bad photoshop montages.

One can learn not only poster layout from this, but also about consistent branding.
